Ceramics - Wheel Throwing (Ages 55+)

Location: Ceramics Room

Learn to use the potters wheel as the primary method of working the clay.

Day 1: Introduction to wheel throwing

Learn the basics on how to make a pot on the potters' wheel, including centering, opening, and pulling walls. We will focus on basic forms such as cylinders, bowls, and small plates.

 

Day 2: Introduction to Trimming

Build on the work from our previous class and trim the bottoms of our pots. We will learn how to center a leather-hard pot and how to use trimming tools to clean and remove excess weight from our pots.

 

Day 3: Introduction to Glazing

Learn the basics of dip glazing and get a basic understanding of the science behind firing pottery.

 

Day 4: Throwing on the Wheel Day 2

Expand on our knowledge from class one and learn about other forms including ring bowls, vases, bottles, mugs, and planters.

 

Day 5: Trimming and Altering

Learn alteration techniques including carving, faceting, and additive sculpture.

 

Day 6: Final Glazing Day

Expand on our knowledge of dip glazing and introduce new techniques including resist and methods of layering.

 

Fee: $120 Members Ages 55+; $210 Members 54 and younger

Please bring your own apron. Registration open to new students two weeks prior to start date.
