The J's youth swim lesson instructors were voted #1 in Kansas City by you, the parents! Our group swim lessons in Kansas City are available for students of all ages. Depending on the student's skill level, they will progress from learning the basics of putting their face in the water all the way to refining their stroke technique.

Swim Lesson Assessment

Find out which level of swim lessons to take
Sunday, June 8 | 2:30-5 p.m. | Indoor Pool

Bring you kiddo to our Indoor pool deck for a swimming assessment. We will get you in the right class and get you all set up for next session! 

Learn what level your child is at, so you can sign up for the correct swim lesson level. Assessments will take approximately 15 minutes. Pick one time slot. If you are signing up more than one child, you must register each child. They can be in the same time slot if there is space.

Parent & Child

This is a parent-child 30-minute class. Each class time will spend time on safety, which can range from basic holds for the very littles to learning to jump in with assistance for the bit older littles as well as structured play and group songs that involve water skills. Any time leftover is for questions or extra free play.

Preschool 1

Ages 3-5 (approximately)

Objective: To help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely with assistance.
Requirements: None

Skills Covered:

  • Entering/exiting the water using ladder, steps or side
  • Blowing bubbles through mouth and nose
  • Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front and back glides and recover to a vertical position
  • Back float and recover to a vertical position
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Tread with arm and hand actions and alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back
  • Staying safe in, on and around the water, including knowing how to stay safe in the sun and how to avoid recreational water illnesses
  • Additionally, learning how to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR

Preschool 2 - PS Introduction to Aquatics Skills

Ages 3-5

Objective: To help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely with assistance
Requirements: Successfully demonstrate the exit skills assessments of Preschool Aquatics Level 1

Skills Covered: 

  • Building on skills learn in Preschool 1
  • Entering the water by stepping in
  • Exiting water using ladder, steps or side
  • Bobbing
  • Front and back floats and glides
  • Finning arm action on back

Preschool 3 - PS Introduction to Aquatics Skills

Ages 3-6

Objective: To help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely with assistance
Requirements: Successfully demonstrate the exit skills assessments of Preschool Aquatics Level 2

Skills Covered: 

  • Reviewing skills learned in Preschool 2
  • Enter the water by jumping in
  • Fully submerge and hold breath
  • Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
  • Back float and glide
  • Change direction of travel while swimming on front and back

Level 1 - Swim Lessons

Objective: To give students success with fundamental skills with the assistance

Requirements: None - Participants start at about 5 years of age.

Skills Covered:

  • Enter water by jumping from the side
  • Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side
  • Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
  • Bobbing
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front and back glides and floats
  • Recover to a vertical position
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Tread water using arm and hand actions
  • Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back
  • Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back
    Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
  • Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help
  • Learn how to stay safe in, on, and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards, and sun safety

Level 2 - Swim Lessons

Objective: To give participants success with fundamental skills, including learning how to float without support and to recover to a vertical position

Requirements: 
Valid American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills certificate
OR
Successful demonstration of all certification requirements from Level 1

Skills Covered:

  • Fully submerge and hold breath
  • Bobbing
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
  • Front and back glides and floats
  • Recover to vertical position
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back
  • Tread water using arm and leg actions
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
  • Finning arm action
  • Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency, knowing how to call for help and perform simple nonswimming assists
  • Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety
  • Learn to look carefully before entering the water
  • Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation

Level 3 - Swim Lessons

Objective: To build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice in deeper water
Requirements: 
Valid American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills certificate
OR
Successful demonstration of all certification requirements from Level 2

Skills Covered:

  • Enter water by jumping from the side
  • Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions
  • Bobbing while moving toward safety
  • Rotary breathing
  • Survival float
  • Back float
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back
  • Tread water
  • Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front
  • Front crawl and elementary backstroke
  • Learn to look carefully before entering the water
  • Learn to perform simple nonswimming assists
  • Learn to recognize, prevent and respond to cold water emergencies

Level 4 - Swim Lessons

Objective: To develop participants' confidence in the strokes learned in Level 3 and to improve other aquatic skills
Requirements: 
Valid American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 3: Stroke Development certificate
OR
Successful demonstration of all completion requirements from Level 3

Skills Covered:

  • Headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions
  • Swim under water
  • Feetfirst surface dive
  • Survival swimming
  • Front crawl and backstroke open turns
  • Tread water using 2 different kicks
  • Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly
  • Flutter and dolphin kicks on back
  • Learn to look carefully before entering the water
  • Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation
  • Learn to perform simple nonswimming assists
  • Learn about recreational water illnesses and how to prevent them

If cancelled/transferred within seven (7) days of class start date: $25 transfer fee or $40 cancellation fee will be applied.
