Bushman Gift of Camp

The Bushman Gift of Camp is designed to make Jewish overnight camp accessible to Jewish children in Greater Kansas City. The Bushman Gift of Camp will cover 75% of overnight camp tuition, up to $4,000 per child, for first-time and returning campers at any eligible camp.

Why This Gift Matters

When you ask a Jewish adult about their favorite childhood memories, many will tell you about camp. Jewish overnight camps are special because they combine traditional outdoor summer fun with an immersive and joyful celebration of Jewish culture, values, and community.

Research backs this up. National studies by the Foundation for Jewish Camp and Brandeis University have found that nearly two-thirds of young adults who attended Jewish camp credit the experience with their continued involvement in Jewish life. Camp builds four things that last a lifetime: belonging, leadership, joy, and Jewish identity.

Yet today, only 1 in 10 Jewish children in Greater Kansas City attends Jewish overnight camp. For many families, one of the reasons is the cost of camp tuition. The Bushman Gift of Camp helps to ease that barrier, so a family's decision can focus on which camp is right for their child, not whether camp is possible.

By making camp more accessible, we are investing in the next generation of Jewish leaders. This incredible gift is available to all Jewish children in Greater Kansas City, regardless of financial need. We are here to help you find the right camp for your family, answer your questions, and keep the spirit of camp alive all year long.

Meet with Jessica Kroll

The Bushman Gift of Camp funds are administered by the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City and paid directly to your child's camp each spring.

The Bushman Gift of Camp is launching as a three-year pilot, with funding secured for the next three summers. During this time, we're building a model to keep the gift accessible for years to come.

How it Works

  1. Choose a camp. Register your child at any Jewish overnight camp in good standing with the Foundation for Jewish Camp. View the list of approved camps.
  2. Apply for the gift. Complete an online application for each child by April 30.
  3. Get confirmation. You will hear back within 10 business days. The Federation will send the funds directly to your camp before its tuition deadline.
  4. Do a Mitzvah. Stanley Bushman often asked, “Are you helping others today?” In his spirit and memory, we hope to inspire acts of kindness, encourage our families to make a difference in the lives of others, and strengthen their commitment to our Jewish community. As part of receiving the Bushman Gift of Camp, each camper must perform a mitzvah (good deed) to help someone else during their time at camp. Detailed instructions on how to submit documentation of your mitzvah will be emailed to families in the summer.
