What is a J Camp LIT?
A J Camp LIT is a Leader-in-Training who:
- Is a day camp assistant who assists day camp counselors with camp activities.
- Is 14 or 15 years old, and entering 9th or 10th grade.
- Works with Barney Goodman Camp, Sports Camp, the Child Development Center (CDC), BOOM!, and a limited number of Specialty Camp positions.
J Camp LIT Responsibilities
- Participates in LIT camp training prior to camp.
- Assists day camp counselors in preparing for and leading day camp activities.
- Assists with set-up and clean-up of lunch and camp activities.
- Talks with and encourage campers to have a positive day camp experience.
- Attends day camp each day during the assigned sessions and times.
- Maintains a positive attitude and represents a good role model for campers.
Day Camp Dates and Hours
J Camp will be held June 1–July 31, 2026. The Day Camp hours for LITs and counselors are 8:15 a.m.–4:15 p.m. Undernights are held on specific Wednesday nights from 4:00 p.m-8:00 p.m. LIT Training will be held Friday, May 29 from 8:15 a.m. – 2 p.m.. There will be a make-up LIT Training held beforehand if you are not available on May 29. More information will be available later.

What You Give
You will share your time, talents, energy and caring to create a fun camp experience for the campers.
What You Earn
- Community Service: you will receive a certificate of community service for the number of hours you volunteer at day camp.
- Stipend: We are pleased to be able to give a stipend to LITs who demonstrate a commitment to their volunteer experience at camp. LITs may earn $200 for every 10 days they complete. The stipend is a thank-you gift and is contingent on your commitment to the day camp and your attendance.
Learning Opportunities
Weekly meetings give LITs a chance to learn about working with children and other staff, how to plan, organize and lead large and small group activities, and problem solving in work situations.
Application Process
Fill out this application and click submit. Your application will be automatically sent to Casey Reed, the Assistant Director of J Camp & School-Age Services. You will be asked about your preferences for volunteering. We will do our best to match your choices, however due to limited positions your first choice may not always be available. Please submit your application as soon as possible. The first round of interviews will be in mid-March.
Interview Process
All new LIT applicants will be invited to participate in small group interviews. After you submit your application, you will be contacted with several dates to schedule your interview. We will begin interviews in mid-March. This is a real job interview, and your opportunity to show your passion for camp, your ideas and your personality.
