Book: "Unsettled Ground: Reflections on Germany's Attempt to Make Amends"

Once condemned for the atrocities of the Nazi regime, Germany has since earned praise for confronting its past through Jewish museums, Holocaust memorials, restored synagogues and educational programs. Much of this transformation was driven by local citizen activists, most born after World War II and few of them Jewish, who challenged their communities to uncover the truth about their involvement in the Holocaust. Their efforts connected them with descendants of Germany’s former Jewish communities, including American author Jeffrey L. Katz, who shares his emotional journey of returning to his ancestral homeland with Germans as his guides.

Jeffrey L. Katz: Veteran journalist Jeffrey L. Katz traveled to Germany several times to explore his family’s roots and meet with local members of the country’s remembrance movement. Those visits were integral to writing Unsettled Ground: Reflections on Germany’s Attempts to Make Amends. He has written and spoken frequently about Germany’s reconciliation efforts and his connections to a new generation there. His stories about these experiences have been featured by NPR, Moment Magazine and various newspapers.

Katz is an editor, writer and digital strategist. He has extensive experience working in newspapers, magazines, radio and online journalism – having been a reporter, editor and manager.
