A Breakdown of Workout Classes Featured at The J That Are Easy on Joints

The benefits of exercise can’t be understated. Adults who maintain an active lifestyle have more energy during the day, sleep better, and have an easier time managing their health. Regular exercise is also great for bone, heart, and muscle health, which makes day-to-day activities and chores less challenging.

The J offers a variety of group fitness classes so that our members can achieve their fitness goals in an engaging and positive environment. We have strength training, cycling, boxing, Meshugge CrossFit, and plenty of other workout classes to choose from. Our goal is to be a leader in health and fitness in the community.

No matter your age or ability level – The J has a group fitness class for you! And that includes our friends and neighbors who are challenged with joint pain and require low-impact fitness options.

What Are Low-Impact Workout Classes?

According to the National Poll on Healthy Aging conducted by the University of Michigan, 70% of adults aged 50 to 80 reported symptoms relating to joint pain or arthritis. Those who are affected by joint issues have a difficult time staying active due to pain, especially during high-impact activities, such as running or jumping.

Fortunately, The J offers low-impact group fitness classes that provide a challenging workout while minimizing joint pain. Low-impact workouts focus on slowly elevating the heart rate using exercises that are less demanding on the joints. For example, running (high-impact) is replaced with brisk walking (lower-impact).

Examples of Low-Impact Group Fitness Classes

The J features a dynamic offering of low-impact workout classes that improve flexibility and core strength, provide mental clarity, and reduce stress. For those who are new to the world of low-impact classes, the following breaks down the top four classes to consider:

  1. Pilates: The J’s 55-minute Pilates class promotes proper postural alignment, muscle balance, and core strength using low-impact movements
  2. Yoga: Center your mind, body, and spirit in The J’s professional yoga studio. During this 55-minute class, participants are led through a series of yoga poses that challenge the different muscle groups in the body.
  3. AquaFit: AquaFit is perfect for those who want a high-intensity workout in a low-impact aquatic environment. The class incorporates a mixture of cardio, stretches, and strength training exercises, using pool props like noodles and buoys to add resistance.
  4. BodyBalance: Borrowing elements from Pilates and Tai Chi, BodyBalance is a yoga-based group fitness class that prioritizes mindfulness. Participants will learn breathing control as they are guided through a series of bends and stretches.

If you are unsure about whether a class is right for you, The J welcomes you to observe a session. The workout class instructors at The J tailor classes to best suit the ability levels of participants, too. This helps maximize inclusivity so that everyone can engage with fitness at the pace that works for them.
