Group Swim Lessons in Kansas City


Group Lessons Will Resume January 2021

Private Lessons Available

Ages 6 months and older

The J's youth swim lesson instructors were voted #1 in Kansas City by you, the parents! Our group swim lessons in Kansas City are available for students of all ages. Depending on the student's skill level, they will progress from learning the basics of putting their face in the water all the way to refining their stroke technique.

Participants located within the building will be picked up from CDC, After-School Program, and HBHA as needed during the day. No more running around in the evenings!

 

Group Sessions

AquaTots - Parent + Child Ages 6 months - 2 years

Objective: Parent + Child classes for little ones. Parent joins their aqua tot in the water for a group, beginner, water exploration.
Requirements: None
Skills Covered: With complete support, students will learn to enter and to exit the water safely after asking for permission, learning to feel comfortable in the water, explore submerging mouth, nose, and eyes and buoyancy on front and back positions, changing positions in the water with support, and basic water safety.

Preschool 1 - PS Introduction to Aquatics Skills  Ages 3-5

Objective: To help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely with assistance
Requirements: None
Skills Covered: With complete support, students will learn to enter and to exit the water safely, learning to submerge mouth, nose and eyes and breath control, front and back float and recovering to a stand, changing direction in the water, swimming 5 feet on front and back.

Preschool 2 - PS Fundamental Aquatic Skills Ages 3-5

Objective: To give students success with fundamental skills with the assistance
Requirements: Students entering this level must possess a PS Level 1 certificate or demonstrate all the PS Level 1 skills
Skills Covered: Students will learn/improve on entering the water by stepping or jumping in from the side, submerging entire head, blowing bubbles, open eyes underwater, front and back glide, and swim 5 feet on front and 3 feet on the back.

Preschool 3 - PS Intermediate Aquatic Skills Ages 3-5 

Objective: To give students success with fundamental skills with limited assistance
Requirements: Students entering this level must possess a PS Level 2 certificate or demonstrate all the PS Level 2 skills
Skills Covered: With very little assistance, students will be entering the water by stepping or jumping in from the side, submerging entire head, blowing bubbles, open eyes underwater, front and back glide, and swim 10 feet on front and 5 feet on the back.

Level 1 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills Ages 4+

Objective: To give students success with fundamental skills 
Requirements: N/A
Skills Covered: Independently, students will learn to swim forward and backward, submerging entire head, breathing technique, visual cues, front and back glide, swim 15 feet on front and 10 feet on back, and recover with assistance if needed.

Level 2 - Intermediate Aquatic Skills Ages 4+ 

Objective: To build on skills through additional guided practice
Requirements: Students entering this level must possess a Level 1 certificate or demonstrate all the Level 1 skills
Skills Covered: Jump into deep water, head first, from sitting or kneeling, submerging and retrieving an object, bobbing, survival float for 30 seconds, treading water for 30 seconds, front crawl 15 yards, butterfly 15 feet, back crawl 15 yards, elementary rescues, safe diving, check-call-care.

Level 3 - Stroke Improvement Ages 5+

Objective: To develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills by increasing endurance through swimming greater distances
Requirements: Students entering this level must possess a Level 2 certificate or demonstrate all the Level 2 skills
Skills Covered: diving, underwater swimming, feet-first surface dive, 1 minute of survival floating, treading and back floating, 25 yards of front crawl, breaststroke and back crawl, 15 yards of butterfly and elementary backstroke and sidestroke, compact jump from height in a lifejacket, throwing assists and caring for a conscious choking victim.

Level 4 - Stroke Refinement Beginner Ages 6+

Objective: Coordination and refinement of strokes
Requirements: Students entering this level must possess a Level 3 certificate or demonstrate all the Level 3 skills
Skills Covered: Shallow dive, tuck and pike surface dives, 2 minutes of survival floating, back float and treading water, flip turns on front and back, 50 yards front and back crawl, 25 yards butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke, 2 minutes of survival swimming, rescue breathing.
