Studio J - Drawing for ages 6-12
Studio J is the newest class offered by the Arts + Culture Department at The J. This class focuses on teaching children to draw, using demonstration and a structured step-by-step process. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of subject matter, artistic concepts, art history, and mastery of their materials. Engaging both sides of the brain, this art class will help develop analytical and methodical thinking as well as imagination, intuition, and holistic thinking. This 8 week drawing session will be coming to Studio J in January 2020.
Musical Theatre Classes
STAGES at The J for 4th-8th graders
This is the perfect fit for the student who wants to give the world of performing a try with musical theatre classes in Kansas City. Our teaching artists will work with your child to explore his or her own talents and build these important life skills: Creativity, Collaboration, Discipline, Empathy, and Confidence.
The class consists of 14 sessions focusing on acting, dancing, and signing, and will conclude with a performance!
Private Music Lessons
Piano / Harp / Steel Drum / Violin / Guitar
Encore! offers private music lessons for students of all ages and abilities from beginners to advanced students. Our music lessons are all private one-on-one instruction to ensure understanding and focus for the students. The lessons are 30 minutes long and meet weekly. Students can choose their own course of study, from the piano, harp, steel drum violin and guitar*. If you are unable to attend your private lesson, a make-up class can be scheduled, given 24 hours in advance. Any “no shows” are not available for makeup classes. Students will have the opportunity to perform in an informal showcase in December and May. Our Lessons are all private however parents are welcome to sit in on their child's lessons. Private Voice Lessons
Our voice lessons are all private one-on-one instruction. Students sing all kinds of music from classic tunes to their favorite artists. Students will learn in how to breathe properly, how to increase their range, proper pitch, how to project and stage presence. The lessons are 30 minutes long and meet weekly. If you are unable to attend your private lesson, a make-up class can be scheduled, given 24 hours in advance. Any “no shows” are not available for makeup classes. Students will have the opportunity to perform in an informal showcase in December and May. Our lessons are all private however parents are welcome to sit in on their child's lessons. Classes are available students 11 and under with Cathy Conley, and for students 12 and up with Krista Blackwood.
Encore! offers dance classes in Kansas City at The J for all ages. Ranging from 2 1/2 years old to adults, we have something for everyone. Class offerings are described here and range from beginner to competition teams and everything in between.
Ages 2 1/2+
Tiny Tots, Creative Movement, Pre-K Combo (ballet + tap), and Kinder Tap + Ballet + Jazz
Level 1:1st-3rd Grade | Level 2: 4th-7th Grade | Level 3: 8th Grade+
Tap + Ballet, Jazz + Hip-Hop, Lyrical, and (Level 3 only) PrePointe and Strength + Flexibility
Performance Team is a class available for students in 1st-8th grade. The group performs 4-5 times throughout the year in the community. The goal of the group is to build our confidence in our performance ability, as well as to share the joy of dance with others. Students must be enrolled in at least one other Encore class to participate in Performance Team. Audition required.
For students who want to compete in dance locally and regionally: solos, duos, trios, and possibly small groups. Extra rehearsals/private lesson fees, choreography fee, entry fees, costume & make-up fees. Students will participate in 2-3 competitions during 2nd semester and highest scoring solos will perform a recital as well as team pieces. Audition required.
Dust off your old tap shoes, or try it out for the first time. Adult tap class for anyone who would like to try it out! Drop in or sign up for the whole session.

Encore is certified in Acrobatic Arts, a nationally recognized tumbling and acrobatics curriculum for acrobatic dance. Focusing on 5 elements- strength, limbering, tumbling, balance & flexibility- students develop skills in a safe and well-balanced way.
